Water Damage Tips

Here is a list of important things to take into account when you have a water loss, but first contact PuroClean Home Rescue so we can get a team of professionals to you home fast!

  • Determine where the water is coming from or what caused it and shut off the source, or call a plumber.
  • Make a determination as to what type of water it is? Is it fresh water (category 1), grey water (category 2) or sewage (category 3)? Of the three types, fresh water is the easier to dry and clean up because there are no contaminants (bacteria etc). Grey water has a medium degree of contaminants and comes from sources that aren't fresh, like if your washing machine overflows, or your toilet leaks from the bowl but there aren't any feces. Sewage is from your toilets and has to be handled with a great deal of care and totally differently to a fresh water loss. Sewage is grossly unsanitary and the possibility of disease will be on anything in contact with this type of water. Don't touch any items that have come into contact with sewage with your hands. Full PPE is required (eye protection, gloves, face mask and we wear disposable suits) when we work with category 3 water losses.
  • Avoid electrical shock by wearing rubber soled boots and keep extension cords out of the water. It's always best to shut the power off to the flooded area at the breaker box. Ask PuroClean for help or SMUD for help if needed.
  • Keep a record of all damage to contents, with photos or video if possible, for insurance purposes.
  • Don't use a regular household vacuum to remove the excess water, rather use a shop vacuum if you have one or place towels down to start mopping up the surface water. DO NOT put newspaper down on wet carpet; the ink will transfer to the carpet.
  • Move as much furniture off of the wet carpet as safely possible.
  • Prop up and cushions that were affected for immediate drying.
  • Place pieces of plastic or aluminum foil under wood and metal furniture legs to prevent discoloration or bleeding. Again, do not use newspaper.
  • Remove any area rugs or oriental rugs from the floor if wet and hang to dry outside or inside. Don't leave a rolled up wet rug in a room - it will never dry.
  • Remove table lamps and other knickknacks from table tops and wipe as much excess water from wood furniture as you can.
  • As long as the water didn't come from the floor above or ceiling, turn the air conditioning on to aid in the dehumidification process. If it's safe and dry outside you can also open the windows to release trapped moist air.
  • Take away any artwork from the walls if affected and place them on a soft surface in an unaffected room. If the pieces are expensive or hold sentimental value we have a business relationship with one of the best art restoration companies in the States.
  • To prevent electrocution ensure no electronic items are on while resting on the wet floor.
  • Get help from the professionals at PuroClean Home Rescue 866-722-7876 for water damage mitigation and restoration services.
  • Household items that have been contaminated by sewage, or that have been wet for a long time, will have to be bagged, tagged and possibly discarded.
  • Store valuable papers that have been damaged by the water in a freezer until PuroClean arrives, we have another contact that does freeze-drying and they will do a great job at saving your documents and rare books.
  • Carpets will be dried within about two days, but walls and could take longer and hardwood floors will take a few more days. Sewage-soaked carpets will need to be thrown out. Homeowners can't effectively dry large areas of soaked carpets themselves in the time required. Contact PuroClean Home Rescue at 866-722-7876 now!
  • PuroClean will ensure that all interior wall cavities and structural members are completely dry. Moisture in walls will cause mold to grow, it is important to examine the walls (with moisture meters) to ensure that they are within the dry standard.
  • Call your insurance company and report the water damage. They will let you know your claim number and adjuster information. Your adjuster will contact you and probably come see the loss in a day or two.

Ineffective remediation following Water Damage causes Mold!

Most mold remediation projects start because of excessive humidity levels, improper water damage remediation or poor air circulation.

If water comes into contact with organic building materials (like wood or the paper backing on drywall) and the water damage isn't noticed or extracted properly mold growth can grow within 72 hours. This mold growth may or may not be visible especially if it's source of water is a leaking pipe inside a wall. The mold contamination may stay hidden within the walls, under the floor, or above the ceiling until the damage is severe or someone gets sick.

Mold contamination can cause headaches, drowsiness, muscle aches, upper respiratory problems, nose bleeds, or even coughing up blood. This can result in transmitting further illness to people occupying the affected area.

PuroClean Home Rescue can help with your mold problem by recommending a testing company who will come out, take air samples and send them off to a lab for analysis. PuroClean (if required based on lab results) will then remove all mold and dispose of it properly, and treat all contaminated areas with an anti-microbial.

No matter how severe the damage, it's in the owner's best interest to call on the experience of a professional mold remediation specialist to carry out the restoration process. Insufficient techniques and incomplete removal by unqualified contractors can potentially cross contaminate the whole home or office building and cause ongoing damage after the treatment which could result in more cost to the owner.

Don't wait to get help. Call PuroClean Home Rescue today.
